The Best Book and Drink Duos

It’s no secret that coffee and books are made for each other (and we’re big fans of both!). It’s also true that both drinks (coffee and tea alike) and books have tons of variety. So, what’s the perfect drink to pair with your sci-fi book and your detective novel? Here are some of the best book/drink duos for coffee lovers and avid readers alike!

Mystery and London Fogs

When we think of a good mystery book, great literary detectives like Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot come to mind. In honor of the British authors of these classic mystery novels, we recommend you pair their books with a hot London fog. Made from Earl Grey tea, milk, and some kind of sweetener (often vanilla), the London fog is named for its resemblance to a foggy afternoon in the city. Aromatic and not too sweet, we think this drink is the perfect Watson to your Sherlock Holmes book.

Romance and Cappuccinos

Let’s be honest, romance is one heck of a genre. From classics like Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice to modern LGBTQ literature like Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, there’s some major variety. What’s one thing they all have in common? Any good romance book goes great with a cappuccino! A popular espresso-based drink known for its small size and extra foam, this drink is as classic and enduring as the romance genre itself.

Science Fiction and Syphon Brew

The world of science fiction is inventive and sophisticated. Coincidentally, the same can be said of the syphon brew. The syphon (sometimes spelled siphon) is an immersion method of coffee making that consists of two separate, stacked chambers. By applying heat to the lower, water-filled chamber, vapor pressure is created and pulls water up into the top chamber, where it saturates grounds to make a delicious brew. Basically, the entire brewing process looks like a cool science experiment! So, the next time you’re reading sci-fi, consider trying a sy-phon.

Fantasy and Iced Chai Lattes

Imaginative and colorful, the fantasy genre has a lot to offer. For fans of this genre, we recommend an iced chai latte. Sweet and aromatic, this tea-based drink is perfect for whatever epic quest your book might be taking you on. Full of strongly flavored herbs and spices, we can’t help but feel like this is the kind of drink an adventurer (like yourself) would be served at a mystical tavern.

Horror and Black Tea

Despite being largely overshadowed by film adaptations, the horror genre in literature is full of bone-chilling tales and psychological terror. Dark and bitter, we think that black tea is a great pairing for every literary thriller. If you prefer your horror novels in the evening (for the extra spooky atmosphere), consider trying a decaf version of your go-to black tea blend.

While there are certainly more genres and drinks out there, we hope this list helps you decide what to read and drink next. Needless to say, whatever you’re reading, there’s a great coffee or tea to go with it!
